# Why can't a fan reply because they are not a contributor?

If the message "cannot reply as they are not a contributor" is displayed, it means the person is currently a follower of your account and not an active contributor. Followers simply follow your profile for free to see your public posts, but do not have access to the private chat because they do not pay for a subscription.

Only your paying subscribers (contributors) can write to you in private messages and interact with you. However, you can send them a message to encourage them to subscribe to your account if they wish to access the private chat and your exclusive content.
